Flying a Drone in Thailand in 2025: What Tourists Must Know

Flying a drone in Thailand can be a breathtaking way to capture your journey — from the turquoise bays of Krabi to the limestone cliffs of Phang Nga or the bustling streets of Bangkok. But before you launch your drone into the tropical sky, it’s essential to understand Thailand’s updated drone laws, especially if you're a tourist.

🛬 Do I Need to Register My Drone in Thailand?

Yes. All drones with:

  • a camera or

  • weighing more than 2 kilograms

must be registered with both the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) and the CAAT (Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand). The process may take several weeks, so it’s best to register before arriving in Thailand.

Note: Even lightweight hobby drones like the DJI Mini series require NBTC registration if they have a camera.

🧾 How to Register Your Drone (as a tourist)

  1. NBTC Registration
    Required for radio frequency use.
    → Apply online: NBTC website

  2. CAAT Registration
Required for safety and airspace monitoring.
→ Apply via: CAAT drone portal

  3. Drone Insurance (Highly recommended)
It’s not legally mandatory, but some provinces and national parks may require it.

🗺️ Where Can You Fly Your Drone?

  • Allowed: Beaches, open landscapes, and private property (with permission).

  • Restricted/No-fly zones:

    • Royal palaces

    • Government buildings

    • Airports (within 9 km radius)

    • National parks (special permission required)

    • Military areas

Use apps like AirMap or Drone Buddy to check for real-time no-fly zones.

✅ Flying Rules You Must Follow

  • Fly below 90 meters above ground.

  • Keep your drone within line of sight.

  • Stay at least 30 meters away from people, vehicles, and buildings.

  • Never fly over crowds, public gatherings, or temples.

  • Fly only during daytime and in good weather conditions.

  • Always have your registration documents and ID/passport with you.

⚠️ Penalties for Violations

Flying a drone without proper registration or in restricted areas can lead to:

  • Fines up to 100,000 THB

  • Imprisonment up to 5 years

  • Confiscation of your drone

Don’t take chances — follow the rules, enjoy your flight, and avoid trouble.

🌟 Final Tips for Drone Travelers in Thailand

  • Apply for registration at least 3–4 weeks in advance.

  • Always check local rules — some provinces (like Krabi or Chiang Mai) may have additional restrictions.

  • Be respectful of local culture and privacy.

  • Don’t fly near elephants, monks, or funeral/buddhist ceremonies.
