Durian – King of Fruits or Smelly Nightmare?

Arriving in Thailand, you’ll quickly encounter durian – the so-called King of Fruits. Its smell is infamous, its price is high, and opinions are always extreme.
What is durian?
It’s a large, spiky fruit with a very strong odor and a soft, creamy inside. Locals adore it. Tourists often don’t – especially after their first bite.
What does it contain, and why is it healthy?
Durian is rich in vitamin C, B-complex (especially B6), potassium, fiber, iron, and magnesium.
It’s a natural antioxidant, helps reduce inflammation, supports the immune system, improves digestion, and may help regulate blood pressure due to its high potassium.
⚠️ It’s high in calories – enjoy in moderation.
My first encounter (FACT):
As a tourist, I bought a pre-packed durian tray left in the sun. I didn’t know how long it had been there. The smell was awful. I threw it away. Later, thanks to my partner, I learned that at local markets they open several fresh durians in front of you – and you pick the one you want. You only pay if you accept one. Since then, I’ve started enjoying it. It’s a completely different experience when fresh.
Practical tips for trying durian:
-
Never buy the sun-exposed, plastic-wrapped kind.
-
Always ask for fresh-cut durian at local markets.
-
Try it outdoors – many hotels ban it indoors.
-
Start small – you’ll know quickly if it’s for you.
